Japan Travel

Jenny asks…

What are the steps to travel to Japan?

I am currently 16, and plan to visit and travel Japan when I am 18. There will be a group of 5 including myself, all who are 18. What are the requirements for entry and stay and all that? I’m a complete beginner to international travel.

admin answers:

Passport, round trip ticket, enough money to support your stay. That’s it.

Paul asks…

As a US citizen living in Japan, where do I go to get travel visas?

I currently have a work visa. It will expire in January. After that, I want to travel in Japan for a week, then other places in Asia, and then possibly return to Japan to travel for longer. Where do I go to take care of all this? I live in Osaka.

admin answers:

You can probably extend or change your status. Ask US embassy in Japan about that. Most places in Asia doesn’t require visa, usually when you arrive, they will give you visa. But if you want to go to China or Dubai call the embassy to inquire about getting a visa.

George asks…

What is the cheapest way to travel around Japan?

I am studying Japanese and want to travel around Japan for a couple of months visiting Kyoto, Tokyo and Osaka, and various other places. However, travelling in japan always seems to be very expensive when I google it. I am a student (in the UK) and therefore on a tight budget. Where are the cheapest places to stay/eat? Cheapest flights and domestic travel?

admin answers:

The cheapest way to travel, is the “shoe leather sedan”

Sharon asks…

Could the radiation from the Nuclear Explosion in Japan travel?

And if so, where would it travel too?

admin answers:

It really depends on what type of radiation is leaking and how. If it is venting radio active steam it will be carried in the atmosphere. This happen when the plant blew in Russia many years ago. If it is being leaked at ground level, then it would not have the possibility of traveling so far and could be contained in the immediate area.

admin answers:

Http://www.xe.com/ is another great currency exchange site.

On December 9, 2008, $1=90.93 Yen.

Where are you from? That means a lot. From my hometown of Dallas, Texas to Japan, it’ll be between $1,000-1,200 for a roundtrip.

Check travelocity from your hometown.

How Much Would A Plane To Japan Cost?

How much Dose it Usually Cost 4 a Round Trip from USA To Sapporo,Japan?
How much do you think it would be?

admin answers:

Current cost would be between $600-1000. I travel to Japan often. I research the flights before I go to Japan very often, sometimes more than once a week checking each website of the airlines I know have the good prices. Please check the links below and watch them, because they sometimes have sales for 1 to 3 weeks, sometimes less, sometimes more, for really great prices. I have never paid more than $900 for a ticket to Japan and normally $600 or less. Links are in order of best possible deal. I hope you have a great trip.

My Chemical Romance site update-ness and new tour dates, and crazy predictions!?

If you don’t like MCR, that’s great, but please respect our opinions on the band as well, so don’t hate. Thank you =]

Annnyway, I have seen some fans awfully confused about the new site, don’t worry everyone is. But, thankfully, in the MCRmy all of us are trying to find out whats going on…
Apparently, if you didnt know, MCR is having a show at the Roxy in LA… Now, if you live in LA, and are in the MCRmy, all you have to do is log in, and you should be getting an email. If not, I have no idea. This email gives you the code, allowing you to access the members page and mainly post blogs up. If you want the link to this members blogs page thing, just shoot me and email X]
Check out the tour section and KRQO (i think that’s it) the radio station is giving away these tickets in some contest that i dont really know about. If any of you are going please, tell me XP
We think the show is just kinda a prep for Japan, and possible Reading/Leeds, but no one knows for sure about the Reading/Leeds appearance so…

Either way, if you have some info, please do share! And if you have crazy predictions, share as well!

admin answers:

Gott, I sooo wanna go to that show! Or the one in japan. Unlucky for me I live in merry old England (lols)!

Theres gonna be a show in reading/leeds! My folks might drive me to there…

Erm… I think the album will be out pretty soon now… Cos maybe the video with gee and ray doing backups means that they’re the finishing touches? Maybe?

I’m kinda babbling on… At the mo it’s 3:30 in the morning…. Oops!

Okay. Bye then!

2. As a youth, Mike was taken in by a legendary boxing trainer/manager, who developed Mike into the fighter he would become. Who was it?

3. Tyson did moderately well as an amateur, compiling an impressive record and trying out for the Olympic team. One fighter seemed to have his number more than any other however. This man beat Tyson twice as an amateur. Who was he?

4. Mike Tyson turned professional in 1985, and fought 15 times that year winning every fight by knockout. How many of the 15 fights did Mike win by KO in the FIRST round?

5. Tyson’s manager Cus D’Amato died before he could see Mike win the heavyweight title. When did he die?

6. Mike continued to knock out opponents in every fight until May 1986. In Mike’s 20th professional fight his opponent managed to last the distance, with Tyson winning a unanimous decision. Who was the opponent?

8. Mike Tyson unified the splintered heavyweight title by beating the WBA and IBF champions to hold all three belts. He then beat Michael Spinks, who had taken the Lineal title from Larry Holmes, to make sure there was no doubt about who was the heavyweight champion of the world. In what round did Tyson KO Spinks?

9. Tyson was scheduled to defend his title in late 1989 in Canada, but instead took a fight in Japan for almost 4 times as much money. This would be Mike’s downfall as the man he was fighting in Japan was Buster Douglas, who would beat him. Who was the opponent that Mike was supposed to defend the title against in Canada?

10. James “Buster” Douglas shocked the world by knocking Mike Tyson out in their fight, and becoming the heavyweight champion of the world. Douglas’s win was so surprising that absolutely nobody gave him any chance of winning. What were the posted Vegas odds for Douglas to win the fight?

13. Tyson was soon holding versions of the heavyweight championship again, beating hapless opponents who never should have held titles in the first place. In one fight, in winning the WBA title, Tyson’s opponent was so scared that he was knocked out by a punch that barely even touched him. Who was this opponent?

14. Tyson next tried to unify the heavyweight titles in a fight with Evander Holyfield. Holyfield had been troubled by a leaky heart valve and had recently been brutally knocked out by Riddick Bowe. When the fight was announced, the odds were announced at 25-1 in Tyson’s favor, but by fight time they were 8-1 for Mike. How did the fight end?

15. The Tyson/Holyfield rematch is one of the most gruesome events in boxing history, with Tyson biting off a piece of Holyfield’s ear and spitting on the mat. After the fight, Tyson was fined and banned from boxing for life. How long did it take before Tyson had another professional fight?

16. When allowed to fight again, Tyson took on little regarded Francois Botha, who he knocked out in the fifth round. In the first four rounds, how many rounds did Botha win?

20. In February 2003, Tyson started to stage a comeback, hopefully for one more shot at the title. He knocked out Clifford Ettiene, a fringe contender, in one of the shortest fights of his career. How long did it take for Tyson to knock Etienne out?

admin answers:

1. Tyson was born June 30th, 1966 in what New York City borough?

Brooklyn

2. As a youth, Mike was taken in by a legendary boxing trainer/manager, who developed Mike into the fighter he would become. Who was it?

Cus D’Amato

3. Tyson did moderately well as an amateur, compiling an impressive record and trying out for the Olympic team. One fighter seemed to have his number more than any other however. This man beat Tyson twice as an amateur. Who was he?

Henry Tillman, who only won because of the amateur rules and judges who did not particularly like Tyson’s style. In their professional careers years later, Tyson knocked Tillman out in one round, despite Tyson being well out of his professional prime.

4. Mike Tyson turned professional in 1985, and fought 15 times that year winning every fight by knockout. How many of the 15 fights did Mike win by KO in the FIRST round?

11 in 1985.

5. Tyson’s manager Cus D’Amato died before he could see Mike win the heavyweight title. When did he die?

November 4th, 1985.

6. Mike continued to knock out opponents in every fight until May 1986. In Mike’s 20th professional fight his opponent managed to last the distance, with Tyson winning a unanimous decision. Who was the opponent?

James “Quick” Tillis

2nd round.

91 seconds into the first round.

Razor Ruddock, if I remember correctly.

There are a lot of false answers commonly used for this one but the real answer is 42-1.

11. In July 1991 Tyson was accused of raping beauty contest winner, Desiree Washington. Tyson was convicted of the crime and was sent to prison. Tyson’s lead attorney for the trial was a peculiar choice to defend Mike. Why?

He was a tax attorney, selected and provided by Don King as some believe was part of a plot to get Mike in jail so he could be viewed as “another black victim of a white system”.

12. Upon his release from prison, Tyson was the hottest ticket in boxing once again. His first fight was against a very limited fighter named Peter McNeeley, who’s father had fought Floyd Patterson for the heavyweight title. How did Tyson win the fight?

McNeeley’s manager threw in the towel and ultimately McNeeley was disqualified from the match for that.

13. Tyson was soon holding versions of the heavyweight championship again, beating hapless opponents who never should have held titles in the first place. In one fight, in winning the WBA title, Tyson’s opponent was so scared that he was knocked out by a punch that barely even touched him. Who was this opponent?

Bruce Seldon

Holyfield won by TKO in the 11th round.

15. The Tyson/Holyfield rematch is one of the most gruesome events in boxing history, with Tyson biting off a piece of Holyfield’s ear and spitting on the mat. After the fight, Tyson was fined and banned from boxing for life. How long did it take before Tyson had another professional fight?

He was suspended for one year and fined three million dollars.

16. When allowed to fight again, Tyson took on little regarded Francois Botha, who he knocked out in the fifth round. In the first four rounds, how many rounds did Botha win?

Four, if I remember right from reading Teddy Atlas’ book.

17. In his next fight against Orlin Norris, Mike for the first time didn’t win OR lose. What happened?

It was ruled a no contest because Mike used an illegal punch and Norris twisted/broke his knee and couldn’t continue.

18. Mike continued to have problems when, against Andrew Golota, Mike’s third round KO was changed to a ‘No Contest’ when Mike failed the post-fight drug test. What drug was found in Mike’s system?

Marijuana.

19. Tyson finally got another shot at the heavyweight title in June 2002 against Lennox Lewis. In perhaps the worst beating of his life, Tyson was knocked down and counted out, bloody and swollen. In what round did Lewis knock him out?

The 8th round.

20. In February 2003, Tyson started to stage a comeback, hopefully for one more shot at the title. He knocked out Clifford Ettiene, a fringe contender, in one of the shortest fights of his career. How long did it take for Tyson to knock Etienne out?

Tyson knocked Clifford out in 49 seconds.

Excellent trivia.

Japan Rail Pass Worth It

Maria asks…

Is it worth it to buy a multi-day JR rail pass when I go to Japan?

I’m going to be in Tokyo most of the time, going to Kyoto for the last 3 days of my trip. So I guess I basically need to take the train from the airport, from Tokyo to Kyoto, and possibly Kyoto to the airport (though I may have someone taking me back to the airport). I’ll be in Tokyo for about 10-12 days, so will most likely use the subways. The 7 or 14 day passes seem expensive for how much I’ll actually use them, so should I just buy individual tickets?
I’ll be going from Kyoto to my cousin’s which is on a navy base, then from there to Narita, for which I think they will take me.

admin answers:

I think JR Pass is worth. Check these blog.

Linda asks…

Should I buy a JR Rail Pass or just pay per trip?

I’m going to be in Japan for a total of 18 days. They only have Rail Passes for 14 or 21 days. I guess I’d have to get the 21 day which is roughly $561 dollars! I’m going to need to take the Narita Express (NEX) to Shibuya when I arrive. I will be using subways and the JR Yamamote Loop for my time within Tokyo. I plan to do as much walking as possible too. I will be taking a day trip to Kamakura, then a round trip to Kyoto. Is it worth it to buy the 21 day rail pass? It seems like with the trips I will be making, it may be cheaper to pay per trip? I’m very confused and would like any advice. Is it possible to get around Tokyo solely by the JR Loop? Does the rail pass cover trips to Kyoto, Kamakura, etc?
TokyoE you have provided some great answers to my questions regarding Tokyo over the past couple of months. Thanks for another great answer. I think I will buy a 7 day pass and use it for my travel to Kamakura, Kyoto and back to Narita. After Kyoto I will also be traveling to Yokota air base, so I think this will work out best. Thanks.

admin answers:

NO NO
DO NOT DO NOT BUY A 21 DAY JR PASS

LOOK AT THE PRICES:

A trip from Narita Airport to Shibuya: approx 3000 yen
A trip from Tokyo to Kyoto and back to Tokyo is only about 26000 yen.
A day trip to Kamakura is about 1500 yen.
JR PASS doesn’t cover subways so you pay more for that too.
Total: About 300 usd.
Cheaper then a 21 day JR pass obviously.

If anything buy a 7 day JR PASS for the trip from Tokyo to Kyoto, as long as that trip is within 7 days then a 7 day JR pass comes out about the same as a round trip.

Other wise pay as you go.

A 21 day JR pass for your trip itinerary is flushing money down the drain. Not even a 14 day JR pass will pay off.

—-
To add if you are traveling from Narita Airport to Shibuya purchase a “SUICA & NEX” package.
It gives you a suica card and a narita express seat. You can use the Suica card on the yamanote line, and subways etc in Tokyo. If you run out, you can recharge the card at vending machines inside stations:

http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/suica-nex/index.html

Again the Suica card is valid on all lines in the Tokyo area regardless of railroad company, since it is computable with the Pasmo system.
—–
You can get to Yokota from Shibuya by going to Shinjuku and and changing to the Chuo Line to Fussa Station. Though its a bit of a walk from Fussa Station I don’t think you’ll get lost finding the base from the station.
—-
ps. Oh yes thumbs down abuse again. Thanks. I know who’s doing it. Plz ignore that.

Mark asks…

What kind of subway/rail/bus/train, etc. passes should I get for my trip to Japan?

I’ll be in Tokyo from March 27th-April 7th, taking two one day trips, to Hakone and Kamakura. From April 7th-April 10th I’ll be in Kyoto. What would be the best passes to get for transportation? I’ve read about unlimited JR passes for 7 and 14 days, but other than my day trips, I’ll just be using the main subway (I think the JR Yamamote Line) in Tokyo, so I don’t know if its worth it for me to buy the 7 or 14 day pass. I’m thinking I’ll buy a one way ticket from Narita to Tokyo, round trip passes for my day trips, then a subway pass for my time. When I go to Kyoto I’ll then buy a one way pass from Tokyo as I may have family picking me up in Kyoto to take me to there house, which I think is on a U.S. Navy base. Any help about what type of ticket plan I should have would be extremely helpful and appreciated.

admin answers:

There is a pass for all JR and other public rails. They come with 7 or 14 days pass. Check with Japanese travel agency.

Tour Of Japan

Carol asks…

What is the average amount in US dollars it would take for a tour of Japan?

I’m just looking for a round about amount. I already know for two people, round trip flights would be around $6,000. But, for the sake of planning for savings, how much would it be to take a tour of the country and stay for about 2-3 weeks? And any advice? Thanks!! =)

admin answers:

With the yen so strong, I’d say plan about $250 a day per person for a basic, adult tour. (Ie: staying in business hotels instead of youth hostels and sneaking overnights in public baths.) Japanese hotels tend to charge per person, so there isn’t that much savings for two travelling over one. My estimate includes hotel (10,000 yen), food (3000 yen), transportation (2000 — some days you’ll have more and some days you’ll have less), entry fees (3000 yen) and miscellaneous shopping.

If you can do a homestay program, you’ll save on hotels, and get to see more of the culture — but you’ll have to bring a nice gift for your hosts. If you can find good deals in hotels, then my estimate is pretty high. With the disaster and everything, things might be a little cheaper than usual on the tourism front.

(BTW, I think your plane tickets are a little high. You might check and see if you can move your trip a few weeks, and see if you can get out of a peak season.)

Mary asks…

what are some of the tour groups that set fixed rates to tour japan from the states?

yeah college student that wants to visit japan with a tour group

admin answers:

I don’t think there is some fixed price tour to Japan. The tour price always fluctuates.

You can look for a tour on this JTB, a Japanese travel agency, site.

Daniel asks…

Anyone know any good tour groups/companies for a first trip to Japan?

My parents want to give me a tour of Japan for my graduation, and I have no idea which company to go with.

admin answers:

Where are you going? What do you want to see? One site that is helpful is the one for Japan Airlines. They have some set tours that are pretty nice. Go to the link below and click the place on the right that says “vacation packages.” Japan is very beautiful and a glorious place to visit. I had my own tour guide, my soon to be wife who is from Osaka, so I got to know Japan from an insiders view. I also suggest buying a travel guide. One I like is the one from Lonely Planet. Their link is below too. Have fun. I hope you have a great trip. New guides come out every October for Japan from Lonely Planet.

James asks…

Does anyone here know where I could find out about the George Foster Tour of Japan?

I reciently read a review of it on the Wrestling Observer website, and it sounded like a wrestling fan’s dream.

Going to puro shows at the Nippon Budokan and Tokyo Dome, meeting legends of the business, eating at wrestling-themed steak houses and shopping at wrestling themed stores.

Does anyone know if it’s an annual thing, or if it was just a one time deal?

Also, were could I find some more info out about it?

admin answers:

I’m sorry I don’t know, but I haven’t heard of George Foster either.
