Tour Of Japan Tokyo

Lisa asks…

What night clubs would you suggest when visiting Tokyo?

I am going with a tour group to Tokyo, Japan in a week and a half. What would be some great night clubs to visit in Tokyo? If you can list the district, the name of the club, and a homepage or a webpage which reviews the club, that would be really helpful.

Links to the homepage or pages reviewing the club get extra consideration.

admin answers:

Velfarre is the best club in Roppongi! It has a big dance floor and lots of awesome lighting, they have a yucky website http://velfarre.avex.co.jp but wikipedia hasn “ok” description. Another club is Club 99 (Gaspanic) which is also in Roppongi http://www.gaspanic.co.jp/. Ugh! I’m so jealous, I miss Japanese clubs! Definitely check out Velfarre though…

Mary asks…

Is Tokyo Jihen Still Touring?

OK, for me, Apple HIME (Ringo Shiina) is a goddess…and Tokyo Jihen is one of the best bands in the world. I have heard that they have all gone back to solo performing…but are there any plans for them to tour Japan again?

I can honestly say that I would gladly pay $500 to see them.

admin answers:

There was a tour between March and May of 2010 by them.

I think there will be another in the future.

Ruth asks…

How and where to buy and reserve Nozomi Shinkansen seats from Osaka to Tokyo?

We will be joining a tour group in Japan in October. The tour starts in Tokyo and ends in Osaka on October 11, of which we have to go back to Narita to catch an 1800 flight. How can I buy the Nozomi Shinkansen tickets? Can I reserve them here while I am in the U.S.? Or, can I buy and reserve the ticket as soon as we arrive in Tokyo? Help….

ET

admin answers:

Check out your local Japan Rail Travel in your country for the Japan Rail Pass tourists can buy. You can get them for a week or more, and cannot buy them in Japan but they give you unlimited travel from when you start using them. They are much cheaper than Japanese people can buy in their country. You will need your passport, and do need to verify them at Shinjuku station ( probably other stations too – Japan Rail should be able to tell you that), when you are in Tokyo. You can reserve seats on the shinkansen at the station , to ensure you have a seat.

Robert asks…

Are there many English speaking people around the tourist areas of Tokyo Japan?

I’m planing a trip to Tokyo, and although I am practicing a bit of conversational Japanese, I was curious if the will be English speaking people, such as Hotel receptionists? Also, How hard will it be to tour around the city (Tokyo) For someone who does not read Japanese?

admin answers:

Most hotel receptionists speak English. But on other places, it depends on where you mean by tourist areas.

Japan Rail Pass Purchase

Sandra asks…

Where do I go to purchase a JR Kyushu Rail Pass?

I’m going to Fukuoka, Japan next year for 3 months. I will be going to a language school and I’m pretty sure that I’ll be using the trains, buses, etc. I’m trying to find a website or something to help me purchase a JR Kyushu Rail Pass for 90 days. Can anyone help me out?
Is there a website that I can go to for a purchase of a rail pass in the Fukuoka area?

admin answers:

We use commuter pass for going to schools or offices as another says.

There are 1, 3, 6-month passes. So you can buy a 3-month pass.

It allows to you take trains between your house and school indefinitely during 3 months.

Ken asks…

Is it worth it to buy a JR rail pass?

I’m visiting Japan from Nov 19 to Dec 3, landing in Nagoya. I plan to fly to Taiwan, out of Nagoya, for 3 days (possibly Nov 25-27). Just wondering if it is worth it to purchase the JR rail pass (7 or 14 days?). I would like to visit Okinawa, Hiroshima, Osaka, Tokyo. Thanks in advance!

admin answers:

So you stay in Japan between November 19-25, and between Nov 27 and Dec 3?

It’s difficult. If you want to use JR Pass during the entire stay, you have to buy 2 7-day passes or so

And you can’t go to Okinawa by train because Okinawa is a remote island. You need to think about it more.

Mandy asks…

How do JR Rail passes work?

I am planning on visiting Japan for two weeks in August, and have decided that the best for me would be to purchase the JR Rail Pass. I want to know what I need in order to change my voucher into an actual pass. What is the procedure like? Do they need to make copies of my passport? Pictures? Local address?

admin answers:

You take your exchange order and your passport to the nearest JR office that does that exchange (it usually won’t be a regular ticket counter, but just watch the signs in the station or go to the ticket counter or information office and ask if you aren’t sure). There’s a small form you have to fill out, and I do believe they copy your passport, but so will all of your hotels. It’s just part of being a foreigner traveling in Japan. After they copy your passport and you turn in the form and exchange order, they should just give you your pass. When you go to buy a ticket, just present your pass and tell them where you’re going. You should also have your passport ready just in case they ask for it too. Then when you go through the gates to use any JR line train, you’ll want to go through the gate that does not have a turnstyle. That gate is usually right next to a manned office. At the office you’ll have to show your pass, your ticket, and sometimes you have to show your passport if you want to get through and board your train.

Sharon asks…

reserving seats on japan rail train?

I am staying in Hokkaido only, for 18 days, but am thinking about buying only a 14 day pass. I do not anticipate using the pass for the first 3-4 days (will purchase separate ticket from New Chitose to Sapporo since it is very inexpensive and the first 2 days will just stay in Sapporo) I do, however, want to reserve my seats for the entire trip when i first get to Sapporo. At the time I exchange my voucher for a (ordinary) rail pass, can i make seat reservations for my entire trip, even if I will not start using my rail pass for about 2-3 more days?

admin answers:

If you have JR Pass which is valid on the day you want to take a train, you can reserve a seat by showing the Pass.

Japan Rail Pass

Daniel asks…

What services can I use Japan Rail Pass on?

Hi.

Im going to Japan in August and Ive bought a Japan Rail Pass. Id just like to know what services I can use them on.

I know I can use it on all Shinkansen services EXCEPT for the Nozomi ones, but can I use it on the Japan Rail subway services for getting around the cities, or do I need to buy a ticket for those ones?

Cheers!

admin answers:

It’s called a JR Rail Pass and you can use it with Japan Railway trains. Subways in Osaka, no go. Though there are trains you can use it on though, such as the JR Loop Line. Buses and some ferries too.

The JR Rail Pass becomes most cost effective when you are going to be doing some travel by bullet train.

George asks…

Where can I buy a Japan Rail Pass in Korea?

Im going to Japan this summer and I need a 7 day Japan Rail Pass. Im going from Korea to Japan, where can I find a cheap pass?
Im flying over, I only need a pass that will cover Tokyo subway and intercity trains. I want to go to Kyoto and other surrounding cities. What are the difference between the train names. Do I have to get a assigned seat or is it first come first served seating?

admin answers:

Are you wanting the pass that includes your travel from Seoul to Japan?
There is a pass that takes you, by hydrofoil, to Japan and includes train in both countries. It is a good deal.
But I have attached the Japan Rail pass info at the bottom.
If you are only looking for 7 days of travel in Japan, you really need to be traveling A LOT to make the pass worth it.
Most people end up doing a lot of travel on the Tokyo Subway, which is different than the Shinkansen/JR pass and would require extra tickets.
I gues I am not sure exactly where you are going, so I cannot make an exact suggestion.
See the site below for more.

Where Can I buy a Japan Rail Pass in the US? And how much do they cost?

I am looking to get a 7 day regular Japan Rail Pass for a trip I am taking in October. Can you tell me where I can buy one? I am in Boston. Also, is it valid for the journey from Narita airport into Tokyo?

Donald asks…

A question for anyone who has ever purchased a Japan Rail Pass?

When you visit the American office to purchase it, do you need your passport there or do you just need your passport when you retrieve your rail pass in Japan?

admin answers:

You don’t need an actual passport to purchase JR Pass. You will be asked your “Passport name” and what kind of pass you are purchasing. Actually you are purchasing a “Voucher” in the States.

When you arrive in Japan you take that voucher to JR station which as JR Pass exchange desk. Then you have to present your actual passport there with the voucher.

You can purhcase JR Pass on the travel agency’s website, by fax or visiting the office.
If might be better to bring your passport with you if you are visiting the office so that you can make sure you are giving your passport name. It is very important.

Also you might want to shop around because each travel agency has their own “exchange rate” and some charges service fee too.

Japan Rail Pass Price

David asks…

JR pass price and exchange rate used – too bad rate!?

Hi,

I recently purchasised a JR pass from the only reseller available in the country where I live.
There price was ~US$25 more expensive than it’s cost JPY28300 with current echange rate.
Of couse I asked why, and they explained that they have a fixed exhange rate to make some profit on this.
It means, 10% more expensive than nominal price.

According to the JR pass webpage:

“(…) are yen prices for a JAPAN RAIL PASS Exchange Order; the actual cost in local currency is calculated at the time the Exchange Order is issued”

Are they allowed take whatever exchange rate they want?to sell JR pass this way? I was hoping to get an answer from somebody who knows the rules applied for JR pass resellers.

I’d prefer if they said “we take handling fee”……

admin answers:

>they explained that they have a fixed exhange rate to make some profit on this.
>I’d prefer if they said “we take handling fee”……

I totally agree with you.
I had same problem. My travel agent said to me that the JPY price on JR website is what JR takes and travel agents had to make profit on that.

I cannot see any logic behind this operation. I might ask someone in Japanese language forums about this when I have spare time.

American tourist in Shinjuku japan. Anything cool to see?

Hi I’m going to tokyo in march and would like some suggestions of things to do and where to eat, party at night, cool stud to see for a couple young adults. Were staying in Shinjuku and are gettingbthe unlimited rail pass so as long as it’s kinda close I’m interested. Prices help as well. Thx in advance.
*stuff not stud lol

admin answers:

I’ve just come back from a two week trip to Japan and also stayed in Shinjuku. Within the immediate area there are a few things you may want to check out. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government building (city hall) is about a ten minute walk from Shinjuku Station. On the 45th floor there is an observatory which gives you a great view of the city. Admission is free. Takashimaya Times Square (just outside of Shinjuku Stn south exit) is a huge department store and might be neat to see if you want to do some shopping. Ueno Park, Sensoji Temple and Meiji Jingu Shrine are also places I would recommend in Tokyo. They are easily accessible by public transit. If you are getting the JR Pass why not leave Tokyo for the day and go to Kamakura. It is a lovely town with lots of temples and shrines to see. It is about an hour from Tokyo by train but the train fare would be free if you have the JR Pass. You do have to pay admission to the temples/shrines but it is usually about 300 yen ($4) or so per person, per place.

Linda asks…

Mt Fuji & Fuji Five Lakes; ways & prices to explore?

I’m going to Japan in a month or so & staying in Tokyo. I want to go and see Mt Fuji and Fuji Five Lakes, but I’m on a budget & the Hakone pass (5,000 yen) is a bit more than I want to spend.

I can’t seem to find any individual prices for things like cablecars, all the tourist info sites just say you can use them with the Hakone rail pass.

Does anybody have any suggestions on the best & cheapest way to visit here for a day trip?

Cheers!
Should have mentioned before – I already have a Japan rail pass, but it will only cover the train up to Otsuka. I’ve found that to get from there to Fuji-Yoshida (next to Lake Kawaguchi) is 1110 yen.

So really I need info on getting around once I’m there; there sounds like there’s lots to do but I can’t find individual prices, or how best to get around & how much it costs…

admin answers:

Hakone pass(Yen5000) only covers Hakone district and you can’t reach near Mt. Fuji and the lakes. If you want go Hakone and Mt. Fuji & the lakes view you need to know other pass so-called Fuji-Hakone pass(Yen7200).

http://www.odakyu.jp/english/freepass/fujihakone.html

The pass is supposed to be very effecient and rational for foreigners.

One way Highway bus fee from Shinjuku to Kawaguchiko is Yen1700 and to Yamanakako is Yen2000 and Mt. Fuji Gogo-me(halfway to top) is Yen2600 so that you have to pay more than Yen5000 if you buy normal tickets to go Mt. Fuji without the pass.

Chris asks…

What am I politically ? Republican, Democrat, Socialist, Liberal, Conservative or something else ?

I am politically confused. I want to where do I lean ? SO I i am going to write down the major issues and where I stand,, and I want YOU guys to decide for me based on what I write for ALL the issues and decice what am I ?

Foreign Policy/Terrorism:
I think we should fight Al-Qaeda and the Taliban whereve it is, and kill its members without mercy, but we should not invade countries that have nothing to do Al-Qaeda like Iraq(Hussen was a moderate muslim) or Iran(they are shia, not sunni). But I do agree with Afghanistan’s mission and wish we send more troops.
Israel must be supported but talking with rogue leaders should be given a chance. We also must maintain are nuclear capability and never surrende it.
America should work with its allies, but it should also put pressure on them to share burdens. We should have a New World Older and help in humanitarian mission, but not take sides in a civil war.

Healthcare:
I think people should choose what they want. If people can afford private insurance, they should have it. If people cannot afford, there should be options for poor people. I also think government should be involved to an extent and make sure people, especially women remain slim, and don’t get fat, cause we lack having thin women.Veterans should be treated with more respect, and have half price on medical costs. Also doctors cannot be sued for no reason. That must stop. There must be tort reform. Only doctors that are reckless without any regard should be sued.

Education:
Teachers should be paid more if they are good teachers. Period. Good teaching means the kids learn and do well in class. There should be extra help provided to students in case they don’t understand the material. Critical thinking skills and logic must be taught early in a child’s life to prepare them for standardized tests. Also Corporal punishment like caning should be used on parents not involved in kids education. Evolution and sex eduaction must be taught in school. Reasonable accomodation should be provided to kids that wish to pray. Gay curriculum like that penguin book is not needed in schools. Gays only need to be mentioned during Sex ed. Our budget must spend more on education and work-fare programs for those that are are not sure of college should be allowed.

Gun Control:
People should have whatever guns even assault rifles, BUT as long as they pass strict background tests. If people are found to be reckless, they have no business having guns. Also no hard drug users should ever have guns. Drug testing should be required.

Energy:
We must invest in many forms of alternative energy. Oil should not be the only one. More experimentation and exploration needs to be done. At the same time, there should be investment in Euroepan and Japanese style of high speed rail and urban transportation to Europeanize American cities. The Amtrak Acela is a joke. It’s not real HSR. Real HSR means 250 mph to 300 mph. Even China has us beat on this. I am not talking about coast to coast, but regional services like in the Northeast, Southwest, Northwest, Midwest, and Southeast should have high speed rail corridors. Eminent domain must be used and protests against this should be crushed brutally. We must have more urban transportation European/Japan style transporation in other cities of America as well aside from NYC, Chicago, Boston, and DC.

Economy:
Capitalism and free markets shouhd be allowed but with reason. Local and small business must never be allowed to suffer.Compeition is key. A McDonalds or Wallmart cannot for example move nearby a 100 year old bar/restaraunt or a mom and pop shop . It will destroy business. There should be free trade, but CEOs cannot make indiscriminate amounts of money or cheat people to make their profits.
1 or 2 Months of paid vacaction should be allowed in workers of high skilled jobs.

Crime/Judical:
Death penalty should be reserved for those that commit cold, calutated, pre-mediated and heinous crimes. If a a gunman robs a shop, and kills the clerk cause the clerk grabbed his gun, that is not enough to sentence to death, life in prison is enough, BUT if the gunman ties the clerk up , after the clerk surrendered the money, and shoots, him, then the gunman should get automatic death. Child molesters(those that commit crimes to kids under 12) should be sent to work labor camps. Judges that give light sentencesd to them should join them in those camps.

Immigration: There must be a large wall on the southern border due to the high crime rate. It must be large enough that they cannot cross. Coast guard must increase patrols in our water. LEGAL immigration is fine as long as people wait in line. Foreign students studying engineering or medicine with good grades that graduate with a Masters or MD should have the right to be U.S. citizens because they will contribute greatly. For unskilled workers, a guest worker program should be allowed since there are cer
