Japan Travel

Jenny asks…

What are the steps to travel to Japan?

I am currently 16, and plan to visit and travel Japan when I am 18. There will be a group of 5 including myself, all who are 18. What are the requirements for entry and stay and all that? I’m a complete beginner to international travel.

admin answers:

Passport, round trip ticket, enough money to support your stay. That’s it.

Paul asks…

As a US citizen living in Japan, where do I go to get travel visas?

I currently have a work visa. It will expire in January. After that, I want to travel in Japan for a week, then other places in Asia, and then possibly return to Japan to travel for longer. Where do I go to take care of all this? I live in Osaka.

admin answers:

You can probably extend or change your status. Ask US embassy in Japan about that. Most places in Asia doesn’t require visa, usually when you arrive, they will give you visa. But if you want to go to China or Dubai call the embassy to inquire about getting a visa.

George asks…

What is the cheapest way to travel around Japan?

I am studying Japanese and want to travel around Japan for a couple of months visiting Kyoto, Tokyo and Osaka, and various other places. However, travelling in japan always seems to be very expensive when I google it. I am a student (in the UK) and therefore on a tight budget. Where are the cheapest places to stay/eat? Cheapest flights and domestic travel?

admin answers:

The cheapest way to travel, is the “shoe leather sedan”

Sharon asks…

Could the radiation from the Nuclear Explosion in Japan travel?

And if so, where would it travel too?

admin answers:

It really depends on what type of radiation is leaking and how. If it is venting radio active steam it will be carried in the atmosphere. This happen when the plant blew in Russia many years ago. If it is being leaked at ground level, then it would not have the possibility of traveling so far and could be contained in the immediate area.

Can I get a Schengen visa in Japan?

I am a citizen of Uzbekistan (Asia). In August I am leaving to make my master’s degree in Japan, Kyoto. I will be residing in Japan for two years on a student visa basis.

During my summer holiday, I would like to to travel across europe.

Right now I am wondering whether I will be able to get the Schengen visa in the embassy of one of european countries in Japan. Or shall I get that visa only in my home country?

admin answers:

At present it is advisable to apply for the visa from your current place of residence. Visa can be applied for up to three month prior to travel. After you have resided in Japan for at least three months you will also be able to apply for the visa from there. The visa needs to be applied for at the Embassy of the country in which you plan to stay the longest time (main destination). If no main destination exist it will be the country of first entry. Schengen visa are issued in Tashkent as follows:
• by the Czech Embassy for the Czech Republic
• by the German Embassy for Austria, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Sweden
• by the French Embassy for Belgium, France, Iceland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal
• by the Italian Embassy for Greece, Italy, Norway, Malta, Slovenia
• by the Latvian Embassy for Estonia, Hungary, Latvia,
• by the Polish Embassy for Poland
• by the Slovakian Embassy for Slovakia
• by the Swiss Embassy for Switzerland
Visa for Lithuania are issued by the Lithuanian Embassy at Ankara/Turkey..

Sandy asks…

Are travel Visas required for Japan?

admin answers:

What passport are you holding?

If you have a us passport, no visa is required if you stay in japan for three months or less. Check out this page — http://www.traveldocs.com/jp/er.htm. It’ll give you detailed information on entry requirements in the land of the rising sun. :)

if you have a different passport, it’s always best to inquire in a japanese embassy/consulate in your country.

James asks…

How to Convert a Japan Tourist Visa?

I have a tourist visa to visit Japan and i intend to pick up a job there as an english teacher. What are my chances of converting my visa to enable me work?I hear that i will not have to make visa runs. Please advice

admin answers:

Why people take visa-run is because it is shortest way to get visa.

If you apply the status change in Japan, it will take more than month to 3 months to get working visa. Most of employer need timing and they don’t wait so long. Anyway it is up to you and your employer. If both of you don’t need immediate new visa status. You may try.

As a result, time is money in a sense.

All you have to do is as follows.

Go to the immigration office with
the forrn of appication for change of status of residence full described.Contract sheet with the employer. The guarantee letter. The employer’s brochure or guide book. Your official certificate of graduation. Your regume about past acitivity in Japan and home country. Alien card. The indipendent interview will also be followed without fail.

Still do you want to stay to apply in Japan?

Btw, if you apply to change status in Japan, you don’t need COE because you appy to the immigration office directly not through the embassy at all.

How much do I need to have in the bank to get a Japan Tourist Visa?

I am a Permanent resident of the USA and I am planning to go to Japan for 9 days… One of the requirements for a Visa is a bank statement… how much does my bank account need to have so I will get approved for a visa? I only have a checking account because I am a full time college student (read: unemployed) and my parents give me money… Actually they will be paying for my trip to Japan… Do I even need a savings account? So how much do you think I should have in my account? Thanks!

**Alot of people are confused about the ‘Bank Statement’ so here is a link that I found: http://www.la.us.emb-japan.go.jp/e_web/e_m02_06_04.htm It said there, at the bottom part about “Tours/Sightseeing” and mentioned US Bank Statements. Thanks again.
**I think some people got confused again (BUT thanks for the answer! I appreciate it so much!)… You see, I am NOT a US Citizen, I am a Permanent Resident (Green Card)… So yeah, I don’t think I can just go ahead and board a plane to Japan… Additional comments are more than welcome… If you already answered, please just add some details or send me a message! Arigatou!
********UPDATE: Just to make it clear, I am a permanent resident (Green Card) who has been in America for only 4 and a half years (meaning, I am not yet eligible to apply for American Citizenship) and I hold a Philippine Passport.

admin answers:

Okay, I’ll add this …!
Go here, http://www.us.emb-japan.go.jp/cgi-bin/right02.cgi?jump_url=data/visa/stv/req_a.htm&visa_type=Short-Term%20Visit&visa_country=Philippines&visa_fee=Gratis
Required document number 4. They actually say that “If you are not paying for your trip, a letter from the person/entity covering the cost of your trip is necessary.”
It still doesn’t say how much money is required, but on this page, not relating to Japan though, http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/brochures/brochures_1229.html
in Angola you need $100 for each day, for Equatorial Guinea you need $2,000 total, Niger $500, and for lots of other countries you only need to show your bank statements, but it doesn’t say anything about having to have money in there! You’ll have to phone your nearest Japanese Embassy! You’ve got to go there anyway, to apply for the visa and to pick it up, but it’s best if you get ALL relevant information BEFORE you travel there! PHONE them!

BTW, I thought it was obvious from your question that you were NOT an American citizen…!

……………………………….

This page

http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/05.html

doesn’t mention bank statements. Neither does this

http://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/03.html#a

Maybe it’s just to prove your address? An adult would be able to take in a bill for the same purpose, but as you probably don’t HAVE any bills in your name a bank statement is official enough to do the job.

Anyway, all you REALLY need to get into Japan is a return ticket – if you don’t have one they’ll send you straight back home!
; )

Perhaps you should check out your local Japanese Embassy’s web-site (if you haven’t already!) It will be on this page

http://www.mofa.go.jp/about/emb_cons/over/north_a.html

If THEY don’t have the right info, phone them up and ask! Maybe you could e-mail them instead, as it’s not a highly classified query! It pays to be sure of why they want to see a bank statement!

Ken asks…

problem with obtaining Japan tourist visa by a Filipino Citizen in residence in the USA?

as is mentioned above, i am a filipino citizen but am now a permanent resident here in america. I am going to the phils for a vacation and am thinking of passing through japan for a week’s vacation. can someone please tell me if i can apply for a tourist visa from here in america..and if so would anybody know the process involved.thank you so much!:)

admin answers:

Although a permanent resident (green card holder) can travel freely outside of the United States, the country you would like to visit may have additional entry requirements (such as a visa). If you are a Nationals of Countries and Areas with Visa Exemption Arrangements with Japan and a holding valid passports, you can apply for landing permission for short-term stays for such purposes as sightseeing and business trips without obtaining a visa. Philippine is not on the list of the countries with Visa Exemption Arrangements in Japan. If you are a Philippine passport holder you will need a visa to enter Japan.

Here’s a link to the Embassy of Japan in the United States
For Japanese Visa Information / Requirements in your nearby consulate/visa office.

The visa requirement information is given by telephone from 9:00AM to 12:30PM and 1:30PM to 5:00PM Eastern Standard Time. Phone: (202) 238 – 6800

Hope this helps.

Travel To Japan Visa

Chris asks…

what type of work/travel visas to Japan are available to those without a college degree?

admin answers:

If you’re an American, you can visit Japan for up to 90 days in one visit. You can return for a second visit for another 90 days for a total period of 180 days within a 12 month period.( no visa needed )
To qualify for a work visa you need to have a four year degree or ten years job experience in a needed job field. There are few exceptions like entertainers / dancers in a night club.
Japan is still in one of the worse recessions they’ve ever had. Most of your regular jobs require native level Japanese. And there’s no shortage of people to fill those job openings.
If you wanted to work on an organic farm you could join their wwoof program. This is where people work on a farm for room & board.

admin answers:

You would need to be legally residing in France in order to be able to apply for a visa at the Japanese Embassy in Paris or the Consulates General in Marseille or Strasbourg [fee: €25 (single entry), €50 (multiple entry)]..

If you want to go to JApan you will first need to travel home and apply for a Japanese visa from there.

admin answers:

Well yes Japan is another country and all.

George asks…

i am from Peru, American Resident, do I need a visa to travel to Japan for two weeks?”?

admin answers:

ALL foreigners require a visa to enter Japan.
However, for foreigners from a country that Japan has a reciprocating agreement with, the ‘Temporary visitor’ status visa will be issued at the Customs and Immigration counter free of charge, and consists of a stamp that will be glued into your passport.
In principle, visa applications should be made at the Japanese embassy or consulate with jurisdiction over applicant’s place of residence.
In the case of Malaysia, Peru and Colombia, it is recommended to obtain visa.
